The Knee JointThe Knee Joint

The knee is the largest joint in the body. The bones of the knee form a hinge joint. These bones include the lower end of the thighbone (femur), the upper end of the shinbone (tibia), and the kneecap (patella).

The rough surfaces at the ends of the femur and tibia are protected with an elastic tissue called cartilage. In a healthy knee, the bones are smooth and glide together easily allowing you to walk effortlessly.

Certain conditions such as osteoarthritis, rheumatoid arthritis, or injury can cause the cartilage in the knee to slowly wear away. This can allow the bones to rub against each other, causing pain and difficulty walking. The kneecap may move and allow the knee to feel unstable.
